8" Magnetic Travel Chess Set in Rosewood Color

I love this little set. Me and my son take it when we go get donuts on sunday mornings and it's very portable and doesn't take up much room on the table. Yes, the lack of extra queens is a little disappointing but we make do. Very high quality and well made.

My partner wanted a travel chess set for some time. While other travel chess sets are great, we wanted something that didnt require folding the board.

After careful consideration, and lots of researching we bought this chess set. Honestly, I was stunned when I first opened the casing. The quality of this chess set is so impressive. I thought that when buying a travel set that we would have to sacrifice on quality of some sort and I'm glad I was proved wrong.

The sizing is perfect. If you're looking for a set that would fit in a tote bag, or a small bag then this is perfect.

My parcel was slightly delayed for whatever reason, and I reached out to the company to locate it's whereabouts and the level of customer service I received was excellent. The customer service representative was tracking my parcel for me and even emailed me when it was delivered to make sure that I got the parcel. I would recommend this chess set, and this company to anyone. Brilliant stuff

I spent hours reviewing travel chess sets before deciding on this one. That's just how I am -- I spend as much time researching something like a travel chess set as I do a new car. Yet, one never knows with eCommerce purchases until it arrives. Well, I couldn't be happier. It's everything I hoped for and more. I could detect no imperfections and I just love it. Plus, I'm extremely impressed with the Chess House customer service. A nice note, with video, was sent thanking me for my order and describing their customer satisfaction policy. The set was impeccably packed and arrive quickly all the way from Washington State to my Upstate New York location. This was my first order with Chess House. They are now my chess supplier.

I bought this board primarily for home analysis, to stop annoying my spouse with the permanently set up tournament sized board on the kitchen table. It suits this need perfectly. I keep it on my desk and use it for various things, setting up puzzles, playing through games, etc.

It’s so easy to move around to the couch, the bedroom, etc. Given that I don’t intend on really traveling with it I think I would have liked the 12” board more for analysis, but I was impatient. This one is perfect.

I didn’t notice until I was taking these photos that one knight is significantly darker than the other but it doesn’t really bother me

This set is well made and easy on the eyes. Nicely proportioned with a handsome case. The magnetic attraction is nicely tight. Very happy with it!

Even if ship & tax charges to France cost more then the item itself, it's worth!
Top quality (India?), not even minor issues in chessmen or board, very practical and portable bag.
A bit too small for playing or serious analysis, but handy enough for visualising game positions when reading a chess book beside, comfortable and secure to travel with and usable in whatever place !
Strong magnetics and very attractive quality look.

I love this chess set . It is perfect size to carry when going for travel. Also it's so cute and stylish.

I bought this primarily for use during analysis and for times when I want to have a convenient-sized "physical" board for online games.

I'm going to complain about some things later, but please understand that I am VERY impressed with this set. The pieces are very nicely carved and finished, and they have a good magnetic attraction to the board. The Bishops are easy to distinguish from the Pawns (not always the case in pieces this size).

The board itself is also very nice; it looks fantastic and I like the overall size and the rounded-off corners and edges. It is also (thoughtfully) felted on the underside, so the whole thing stays in place on my lap or on an airline tray table.

I have noted a couple of issues, but from my perspective they are minor:
1) The board appears to be one solid piece of wood covered with a vinyl (or similar) decal representing the playing surface and the border. Honestly, I wouldn't have noticed except for the very small misalignment of said "decal", corner to corner. For the price, though, I anticipated a finely inlaid board...
2) A few of the pieces have glue bleed-through on their felt bottoms, which have hardened and left a rough patch. This doesn't affect the magnetic attraction, but does result in a very audible "scratch" sound when sliding the piece. It is only on 4 pieces overall, and not a deal breaker by any means.
3) The carrying case is very nice. It is well padded, it has a sturdy zipper, and it is sized appropriately. I dislike the "storage" cutouts, however... They hold the pieces "too well", making it quite a task to remove the pieces to set up the board. This is a "me" problem, however: I don't like fiddly bits that add extra effort and time without contributing much to the overall experience. Sadly the organizer foam is (VERY securely...) glued into the case, so I don't think I will be removing it, but now when I transport the set I am carrying the pieces around separately in a small plastic case instead of putting them back into their cutouts in the foam.

The magnets are strong enough so that no piece moves, even when the board is held upside down, but light enough so that you can only barely tell they are magnetic when you lift a piece. The pieces slide easily across the board. The board itself looks great. The set’s case is well-made and convenient. I lost a piece and ordered a replacement that arrived within 5 days. I cannot recommend this set highly enough.

A $71 chess board from a chess house shop doesn’t come with extra queens and the support that’s mentioned is vacant. No queens available and no response from inquiry on the lack of inclusion or timeline on availability. It’s a pretty nice board but lacking for the price point on an 8” setup.

This travel set is perfectly sized. The pieces are not too small as to make it difficult to play with, and they are carved distinctly enough that you won't confuse the bishops for the pawns. The board came in perfect condition with none of the defects that have been described in some of the other reviews. Colours are warm and contrast is good on the eyes. I think it would also make a great first set for a novice.
My only criticism is about the felt on the bases of the chessmen. Some of them were unevenly cut and there was dried glue on the felt. It doesn't bother me too much and it does not appear to impact on play.
Shipping was super fast; it took only 4 days to reach me all the way in Singapore!

I have two of the "classic" Drueke travel sets - one all plastic and one beautiful folding one made of wood and metal board - the wood one probably bought by my dad in the 1970s.

Literally met my wife, teaching her to play on one of them on a multi-day raft trip 20 years ago. She hates the bishops. It was time to upgrade. Beautiful little board, the magnet is subtle but strong enough to hold the pieces upside down. Great service. It's not the fastest shipping to Canada..., that's just a heads up; I don't care.

The board is a classy little beauty that I can't wait to bust out on many a future adventure.

This is an update to my 5-star review of Nov. 1, 2022. Four months of use has altered my approach to this set. I no longer intend to use it for travel because, while its zipper case is high quality, I have found it too cumbersome to insert and then remove pieces into the foam storage slots. Instead, I am now using this set on my smallish desk full-time while going through games in books, etc. Its 8" size is perfect for this. One other observation is that one white pawn is a bit darkish in color and one brown pawn is a bit light in color. Also, I wish an extra queen had been provided. The manufacturer should be able to correct both of those issues. I now rate this set as a 5-star desk companion. I am finalizing my purchase decision for a travel set and, at this point, pretty sure I'm going to go with the 9" Milled Leather Travel Magnetic Set. Pieces are stored in a zippered case which I know I'll prefer to the piece storage issue referenced above -- e.g. it will save much time when using it at a coffee shop.

Perfect companion for game analysis and play in tight quarters. The board construction feels and looks excellent, and the pieces are very well made.

Love the board. Such great quality and my kids think the small pieces are so cool. We use it when we go out to dinner. I did tear out the piece storage and we just keep the pieces in a bag because it's a little arduous to get every piece out to set up. We're more of a "dump it out and get going" kind of family. I wish that storage was a bit shallower and user-friendly, but that's probably unreasonable to ask for at this price point.

If I was the inventor/maker, what I'd actually do is make the king's top a little less breakable and put memory / soft foam in the top of the case so you could simply close it up and leave it ready to play at all times. I may try to finagle that with this set, although the king tops might have to come off to make that work.

A no-brainer purchase if this is what you're looking for, though!

Really like this travel chess set. Nice fold-out board, chess pieces hold to board with light magnets, pieces store securely in foam...all in a great zip-up carry bag.
