3 Player Large Wood Chess Set

The board is alright, but doesn’t feel like a premium item, and many of the felt bases on the pieces aren’t centred, hanging to one side, further lowering the overall quality of the product. Instructions not included.

I was happy with the service from the easy to use website to the update emails. It arrived quickly and I was able to track the parcel from start to finish which I appreciated. My only complaints are 1) it arrived damaged - we were able to glue and clamp the damage to the side of the board so no big deal. I have bought from here before with no damage issue. 2) I bought an instruction manual assuming it was a manual on how to play 3 person chess (I assumed this as it was suggested after I added the board to my cart) however it was a manual on how to play normal everyday chess. 3) The inside which houses the pieces was flimsy plastic. Other than those 3 small complaints I’m very happy with everything else. I have bought from here before and will buy from Chess House again.

I love the new 3 player chess board. A nice addition to my collection. Intense!

Responding to the previous reviewer, we did need to modify our rules pertaining to "in check". The mod was this: you must actually kill the king and take him off the board. Whoever actually kills the king and removes him from the board can claim the remaining pieces. This means all other rules pertaining to "in check" go out the window. A player does not necessarily need to respond to being place in check, since the third player could potentially undo the check in their turn. However, usually you still do respond when being placed in check, and the effect ends up being that the king about to die gets one lost shot to make an offensive move (since being in check or check-mate does not prevent that person from making a move).
Loads of fun. Highly recommended for chess fans in your family.

This set is very nice for the price. The three way chess game is a lot of fun and involves a very different strategy. However note that there are special situations where it may not be clear how to proceed. For example, can you move into check and hope the next person will remove the checking piece? And in one game, if red delivers a discovered checkmate but the checking piece belongs to black, does red win or does black win? The pieces are very light and easy to knock over but fully functional if you're careful. They are also just a little big for some squares. I ordered three inch pieces with 1.1" king base and good weighting and they work better.

The solid wood board and pieces are beautiful. It is difficult to wrap your mind around how the pieces move through the center but if you lookup 3 player chess on YouTube there are good tutorials. Your first game is tough but it's a lot of fun after that. The entire set feels very solid and I liked the design of each of the pieces. This will be an heirloom to pass down for sure. I wish the felt on the inside was bound to the wood vs. removable plastic but that is not a big deal. I would recommend this set to anyone, it's gorgeous to look at and incredibly fun to play. I really liked the large size too. I wouldn't want it any smaller.
